The words
Verse 1. All the way my Saviour leads me;
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt his tender mercy,
Who thro’ life has been my Guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in him to dwell!
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well;
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.
Verse 2. All the way my Saviour leads me,
Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for ev’ry trial,
Feeds me with the living bread.
Tho’ my weary steps may falter,
And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! a spring of joy I see;
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! a spring of joy I see.
Verse 3. All the way my Saviour leads me;
Oh, the fulness of his love!
Perfect rest to me is promis’d
In my Father’s house above.
When my spirit, cloth’d immortal,
Wings its flight to realms of day,
This my song thro’ endless ages:
Jesus led me all the way;
This my song thro’ endless ages:
Jesus led me all the way.

The story behind All the Way My Saviour Leads Me
Fanny J. Crosby wrote the words, and Robert Lowry wrote the tune. The hymn first appeared in 1875 in Brightest and Best, a Sunday school book that Lowry and W. Howard Doane edited for Biglow and Main in New York.
Hymnary.org's note says Crosby had received a very unexpected gift. She was sitting in her quiet room, thinking about God's goodness, when the hymn came to her mind. It credits the account to Ira Sankey. The Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal companion gives more detail. Crosby needed five dollars before her publisher could pay her, and a friend handed her that exact sum. The Hymnary note does not name the amount.
Crosby sent the words to Lowry, whom she had known for about nine years and often asked about wording. He wrote the tune in 1874 for these words. Hymnary.org calls the tune ALL THE WAY and the Adventist companion calls it LOWRY.
The original heading was "So the Lord Alone Did Lead Him," from Deuteronomy 32:12. Crosby lost her sight at about six weeks old and composed without waiting for inspiration. The hymn has three stanzas, each followed by a refrain.
Fanny J. Crosby
1820-03-24 to 1915
Fanny Crosby was born in Southeast, Putnam County, New York, on March 24, 1820. She lost her sight at about six weeks old after an illness and poor medical treatment. She began writing Sunday school hymns for William B. Bradbury in 1864, and her first hymn appeared that year in The Golden Censer. On March 5, 1858, she married Alexander Van Alstyne, a blind musician she had met at the New York Institution for the Blind. Hymnary counts about eight thousand poems, including more than four thousand hymns for Biglow and Main, and she used nearly two hundred pen names. Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology gives her birth year as 1823, which differs from the other sources.
Robert Lowry
1826-03-12 to 1899-11-25
Robert Lowry was born in Philadelphia on March 12, 1826, and died in Plainfield, New Jersey, on November 25, 1899. He studied at Lewisburg University and served Baptist churches in West Chester, Pennsylvania, New York City, Brooklyn, Lewisburg and Plainfield. He taught belles lettres at Lewisburg and received an honorary D.D. in 1875. Lowry edited Sunday school songbooks, including Bright Jewels and Pure Gold (with W. Doane), and wrote many gospel tunes. He is best known for Shall We Gather at the River and for the refrain and tune of I Need Thee Every Hour.
