Ev’ry hour I need thee;

I come to thee.

The story behind I Need Thee Every Hour

Annie S. Hawks wrote the stanzas of I Need Thee Every Hour in 1872 while she was doing housework. One account says June and another, citing John Julian, says April. She felt God close and wondered how anyone could live without him in joy or in pain. The title came to her. Robert Lowry had been her pastor at a Baptist church in Brooklyn and had urged her to write hymns. He added the refrain, "I need thee, oh, I need thee," and wrote the tune, which hymnals call NEED. The hymn was sung in Cincinnati in 1872 at a national Sunday school meeting. Hymnary calls it the National Baptist Sunday School Association, while another source names the National Convention of Sunday Schools. It was printed in 1873 in Royal Diadem for the Sunday School, which Lowry compiled with William H. Doane. The printing carried John 15:5 under the title. Hawks wrote verses for Sunday school songbooks for years. One account says she wrote about 400 hymns and that this is the only one in common use. The original had five stanzas, and some hymnals drop the fourth or fifth. D. W. Whittle said the hymn's stress on "every hour" led him to write Moment by Moment.
