The words
Verse 1. All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;

In His presence daily live.

All to Thee, my blessèd Saviour, I surrender all.
Verse 2. All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken—
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

Make me, Saviour, wholly Thine;
Let the Holy Spirit witness
I am Thine and Thou art mine.

Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing rest on me.

The story behind I Surrender All
Judson W. Van DeVenter wrote the words and Winfield S. Weeden wrote the tune. They first appeared together in Gospel Songs of Grace and Glory, published in New York in 1896. Weeden, Van DeVenter and Leonard Weaver compiled that book.
Van DeVenter told Haldor Lillenas, in a book published in 1952, that he wrote the hymn to mark the time when he gave his life to full-time Christian service after a long struggle. He wrote it during meetings at George Sebring's home in East Palestine, Ohio. Another undated account, whose source is unknown, describes the struggle as one between his artistic gifts and evangelism. A 1902 article in the Epworth Herald says Van DeVenter wrote the words at Weeden's suggestion. The accounts differ, and no source reconciles them.
Weeden taught singing schools in Ohio and traveled with Van DeVenter on evangelistic campaigns. He planned the song for a duet on the verses and a choir or congregation on the refrain. Most hymnals now print it in four-part harmony for everyone to sing.
Pentecostal Hymns No. 2 included it in 1898. Weeden recorded it on an Edison wax cylinder in 1897. The original has five stanzas, and many books leave out the last one. Churches often use it as a hymn of response or dedication.
