Refrain There is power, power, wonder-working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder-working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

The story behind There Is Power in the Blood
Lewis E. Jones wrote the words and the tune of There Is Power in the Blood in 1899. He was born in Yates City, Illinois, in 1865 and grew up on a farm near Davenport, Iowa. He studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, where Billy Sunday was a classmate. He spent 36 years with the YMCA in Davenport, Fort Worth and Santa Barbara, and wrote more than 200 hymns.
Hymndex places the writing at a camp meeting in Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. Jones heard a sermon on the power of Christ's blood, drawn from Leviticus, and the hymn took shape from it. The source gives the year but no exact date.
The four stanzas each open with a question. Would you be free from your burden of sin, from your passion and pride? Would you be whiter than snow? Would you do service for Jesus your King? The refrain gives the same answer each time, that there is power in the blood of the Lamb.
Jones's manuscript did not stay with him for long. Within a year Henry Lake Gilmour bought it. Gilmour and William J. Kirkpatrick published it in Songs of Praise and Victory. Hymnary.org counts 467 hymnals that print it, and it is also listed under the title Power in the Blood.
Hymnary.org lists 20 Scripture passages for the text, and 1 John 1:7 and Revelation 7:14 appear most often in hymnals. Most printings of the tune use B flat major.
