The words

Verse 1. We have heard the joyful sound,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Bear the news to ev’ry land,
Climb the steeps and cross the waves;
Onward! ’tis our Lord’s command;
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!

Verse 2. Waft it on the rolling tide,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Tell to sinners far and wide,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Sing, ye islands of the sea,
Echo back, ye ocean caves;
Earth shall keep her jubilee;
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!

Verse 3. Sing above the battle strife,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
By his death and endless life,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Sing it softly thro’ the gloom,
When the heart for mercy craves;
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!

Verse 4. Give the winds a mighty voice,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Let the nations now rejoice,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Shout salvation full and free,
Highest hills and deepest caves;
This our song of victory,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!

The story behind Jesus Saves

Priscilla J. Owens wrote We Have Heard the Joyful Sound, which most people call Jesus Saves. According to Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology, quoted at Hymnary, she wrote it for a Sunday school mission anniversary. Owens spent her whole life in Baltimore and taught in public schools there for 49 years. She belonged to Union Square Methodist Church and wrote most of her hymns for children's services. The Scotch Church Hymnary of 1898 included this one. Hymnary lists her dates as 1829 to 1907, and one hymnal gives 1822 to 1899.

William J. Kirkpatrick wrote the tune JESUS SAVES, which Hymnary dates to 1882. Kirkpatrick was born in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, in 1838. He worked as a carpenter and in the furniture business from 1862 to 1878 and then gave himself to music in Philadelphia, serving as music director at Grace Methodist Church. He compiled about a hundred gospel song collections, beginning with Devotional Melodies in 1859.

Baptist Hymnal 1991 prints the hymn in G major under the first line We Have Heard the Joyful Sound and lists Romans 10:9. Hymnary lists G major in most books and F major in Baptist Hymnal 2008. Hymnary's tune page gives no history of how the hymn first reached print.
